Looking for a new job - 3D designer

Well I currently have a job (first one out of college) and it is time to step up not only my income, but also acquire something more suited to my strengths, desires, and talents.

I create, illustrate, and sculpt decorative products from scratch and to client specifications. I am very creative and have excellent illustration and sculpting skills in cartoons and realism. My work is primarily figurative and I have much experience is sculpting decorative cake/muffin pans, dolls, and animal figurines. Not only do I design but I have knowledge with preparation for manufacturing which includes draft fix and parting lines.

I have additional experience in 3D laser scanning to reverse engineer parts.

If anyone knows of anything remotely applicable to my skills, please let me know. The more leads the more networking. Send me a message and I will send more contact information and a resume.

Thanks!

Michele

1:1 training in silversmithing and beyond!

This is a unique opportunity to learn basic techniques of metalsmithing affordably and with full attention from a teacher. It’s also a great way to get inspired! The best way to learn anything is hands-on training in a 1:1 teacher:student environment. My goal is to help you get excited about the possibilities of using the materials and tools in order to realize your creative visions in metal. Are you dreaming of wearable art but don’t know how to start making it? Do you have larger sculptural goals? Something in between? I want to help my students plan out the path of learning that works best for them. Whether you just want to tinker and get the hang of metalworking to make a few projects, or if you want to eventually put together your own studio someday, I can offer my experience and advice, along with an opportunity to try things out and see what works for you.

Classes focus on jewelry and sculpture techniques using non-ferrous metals (silver, copper, bronze, brass). Piercing, Raising and forming, soldering, cold connections, mold making (although casting will be done elsewhere) and more.

Options for welding instruction can be discussed for the future, but are not available in my space at this time.

Each class is 3hrs long, and takes place at my home studio in East Oakland. The cost is $90, and after the first lesson or so there will be added materials cost, which will vary depending on what your goals and projects are.

Lesson times are flexible.

This is a very special opportunity that is hard to come by. It is difficult to get the attention you need in large classes, and the expense tends not to feel gratifying. This way you will your money’s worth and more.

Background on the teacher:
Shira Loa has a BFA from the University of Michigan. She did two years of post-graduate work and apprenticeships with accomplished metalsmiths Greg Wilbur and Ben Neubauer in Portland, OR, who have both been featured in numerous craft and metals magazines, galleries and museum exhibitions.

Leather has been and will remain the stable of human tools and clothing. Once the world has fallen back to the basics, there will be leather. But will anyone know how to use this age old resource? I hope to keep this knowledge alive. My name is David and I am here to say......I will!!

At What event can you experience a Renaissance style Battle with over 200 soldier wielding pike----- holding off 30 cavalry--- Black powder matchlocks blazing and Cannons booming?

This event is becoming the ultimate destination as Re-enactment Soldiers from all over the Nation are coming to attend and participate in this annual spectacular event.......
Any experience of using bindis for decorating gifts?

Last Christmas we had many customers from USA buying bindis for using it as gift decoration. I was keen to have feedback from people who have used it this way.

These little stick-on bindis with various designs and colors, have been traditionally used on the forehead and recently as body decor by belly dancers. Would it also be good for gift decoration?

How Much?

The eternal question.

How much is our work worth?

I am a leather crafter and I always use the best materials available, I hand cut, hand tool and hand stitch every thing I make.

Increasingly I am finding that people are complaining that I am over pricing my work. Unfortunately they seem to be comparing it to mass produced items from third world countries that pay children about half a buck a day to do the work.

I see many crafts people in my area who seem to be resigned to getting less for there work just so they get something.

So what to do?

Should I pay myself like some third world wage slave and skimp on materials and workmanship?

Should I try to find a way to educate the customer as to why I charge what I do?

Should I just resign myself to waiting for that increasingly rare person who seems to appreciate solid hand craftsmanship?

I'm sure some of you have faced this dilemma as well. Any opinions are welcome.

Hello -
Sorry for just dropping in here...

I KNOW that there must be other professional artisan/ from scratch/ hand made Production bakers - that is, folks that produce larger quantities of breads, breakfast bakeries, and desserts following the traditional methods.

Is THIS the place to find others that are working in this field, trying to keep the traditions alive ?!?

Thanks for any help or directions as to where I "should" be looking for others...

Hi all,

I am working on a project and will need a selection of milagros. Does anyone have any ideas of where I can find some nice, inexpensive base metal milagros. I've found some but they were about $1.00 each and that is too high a price for what I need.

Thanks!

Seeking Consignment Artisans For Our Store!!

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of opening a brand spankin' new (and my very first!) store in New Buffalo, MI. The name of my store is 'Superfly' and we will be specializing in t-shirts, jewelry, vintage purses, wierd home accents, original outsider arts & crafts and generally unique gifts! I am currently looking for artists and crafters that might be interested in putting items in the store on a consignment basis.

The store is located in a big, upper-class art community area and you would get plenty of exposure for your work! So anyway, if you might be interested, please feel free to drop me a line either here on Tribe or to my email addy: superflystore@gmail.com

Thanks for reading my post and I look forward to speaking with all soon!!
New and have a quick question

Hey everyone!
I'm Elizabeth......from the Atlanta area.
I have a quick question: I know the very basics of lampworking....I bought a kit a while back and made a few beads....but then...well...you know, life happened and I stopped doing it althogether and sold the kit. I could kick myself for doing that..hahaha!
I am looking for lampworking classes in the Atlanta GA area. I have found quite a few classes available....most are a 6 hour class that teaches you the very basics....which I DO need to brush up on....but I want to further the knowledge that I already have with out having to spend 500$ on 3, one day classes. I am willing to pay for classes....but I really want to have some sort of appreticeship and not a one day class. I make jewelry as a profession on the side....and would love to have to ability to add glass elements in it that I have made myself.
Does anyone know of something like that in this area and can steer me in the right direction.?

Hello all!
Just wondering where I could find a quality school where I can learn glass and metal techniques of various sorts. I would like to go somewhere relatively small -- more reminiscent of apprentice/master times, where I can learn some older and newer techniques. Don't even know if a place like this exists!
Thanks for helping,

yes, we are carnivores and not having much success in getting the leather side of our sheep hides to soften in the tanning process. We are only using non-iodized salt to cure and have tried various oils to soften and work the leather side some but eventually they still end up drying out and becoming stiff. any suggestions ?

Buying silver in Thailand?

I am going to Thailand (several areas from the North to the Islands & BKK) and would love to know if you have ever bought silver beads there. If so, specifically where? Are they easy to find? Do I need to worry about anything like documentation - like applying for a business-related Visa (as a tourist I will go for under 30 days so I do not need a visa otherwise) ? I would certainly buy more than the average shopper, but not like a major importer...Don't know if customs will be an issue...Any advice would be great. If I do bring stuff back, can I write off my trip? And to do that, what documentation would I need to do so legitimately, if I were to get audited? Thanks!

I have been wanting to work with leather, but am having a little trouble finding supplies in my small town. On the web, I just don't really know what I am looking at, or what I will need to make a belt or some other beginner project. I am looking for cool studs and grommets, etc.
Also if anyone has reccomendations for books on the subject that would also be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,

We are hoping to begin a primitive artisans/eco/we arent entirely sure what community on part of our rural property. We are offering those with primitive or true "hand"crafts, eco friendly, or Celtically inclined to come to our land, rent a space on which to construct shelter, grow crops, raise small livestock, practice any of the primitive arts. There are no building codes here, there is elec to the property, composting toilets or lagoon allowed. This is our first attempt at creating an experimental community that embraces a way of life life long since abandoned.
It is our hope that skills will be shared, spiritual enlightenment will be pursued and lives will be enriched. We live in south central Missouri in the foothills of the northern Ozark mts. On my profile you can see a pic of the land where we hope for this community to dwell. In the pic it is covered in mist rolling into the valley. The land has easy access on a black top road, 19 miles to a college town (Rolla) and 12 minutes to Salem, MO. Anyone interested please email to Dreamspinnerstudio@yahoo.com We would love to see many take this path, for a few weeks, months, or until whenever. Some may never want to leave. And no we arent nutcases. We just want to take the human experience to the next level.

Traditional crafts

ONE OF THE MOST noticeable and regrettable effects of the 20th century has been the rapid erosion of traditional crafts in England. The relentless progress of urbanisation, the rise of mass production and the destruction of family firms have meant that craftsmen have become a dwindling band in today’s society. Although we might imagine that the reaction of the public to this fact would be indifference, that’s really not true.

It could be argued that traditional crafts are an anachronism but people today are fascinated to see craftsmen such as blacksmiths, thatchers and stonemasons at work.

Designing vs. Producing - HELP!

I have a very important problem that is dastardly depressing… I would greatly appreciate any advice.

I completed a whitesmithing apprenticeship in Florence, Italy... I learned the works: casting, carving, reposse, embossing, etching, stone setting and metalsmithing the old fashioned way. Not only did I have to pull my own wire, but I had to melt my metal, pour it in a block, cut it, and shape it... then pull it. And then maybe make it into a prong setting for a faceted stone. So we are talking OLD SCHOOL.

And now, here I am in the USA again, looking at Fire Mountain Gems and Rio Grande catalogs and ACK! A pendant like what I just took a week to carve and cast is being sold for $20. I don't mean the exact design... I just mean that when I am making a design and trying to sell jewelry, I make producing nothing in comparison. Price wise and quantity wise. A few pieces with a silicone or rubber mold is all I can afford. *sigh*

So the question is... am I better off as a designer? Should I make my designs, patent them, and sell them to a company instead of trying to putter around with a private business? I now work in the Diamond District of NYC so I know what it is to outsource and construct with already bought in bulk components. Buy the woven cord, buy the pendant, and put them together; half the time the clasp is attached! And then they can produce a billion in no time, charge a little, and sell sell sell. With my old world learnings, I just can't keep up emotionally. I can't understand how to outsource and start with components. Yes, it is jewelry making when you are working with loose beads and findings… I wholeheartedly believe that. But when you are buying a pre-made pendant and putting it on a pre-made chain and then calling it your own? I am seeing tons of that and it just makes me feel so moot point.

How would one go about selling designs to companies? Patenting? My specialty is cast pendant and earring designs...

Please help or maybe direct me towards someone who can.

Thank you very much,

Looking for a woad dye buddy.......

TOU

Incredibly draconian and perhaps the most censurious of all the online communities'.

Flagging

My best friend posted pics of US soldiers who had died in Iraq, and maimed Iraq civilians. The former were flagged, and removed, no notice given or discussion offered. The horribly maimed Iraq citizens weren't deemed offensive, apparently. I wonder if the staffer who removed the pics looked at the pics to either side of the soldiers, or even read their own TOS?

New format

It sucks. It's just designed to net more views of different ads, not ease of use or fun. Nothing has been changed even though every comment I've read -- and there are a lot -- has been that the Tribe community hates it.

I had hung around hoping that something new would show up to take its place, but can't stand this anymore. Tribe is now administrered by uncaring, unresponsive, beaten-down, passive-aggressive staff and the self-righteous fanatics who have time to flag, flagrantly feeding their egos. There has been no improvement or even a slight halt to its downward slide. This is not something I want to contribute to anymore. My thanks to all the folks I used to talk with…and I hope ya'all will think on whether it's worth it to support Tribe as it is now.

Hi there,
I've been selling my boyfriend's glass beads/pendants on ebay for the past 4 yrs. I'm looking to find more beautiful creations to list. Any artists not wanting to have to deal with the whole selling aspect of things? I have lots of experience and great feedback.

sites offering this kind of duvet cover?

hi, i've been looking for a duvet cover and/or pillows (covers) for my friend in something which is simple, contemporary but with a slight asian feel. she has these wonderful slightly iridescent shantung drapes in different warm colors - amber, burnt orange, darker orange and a chartreuse color. she likes indian sari and thai silks a lot but the mass-produced stuff seems to be cheap-looking, stuffy or just too visually busy.

if any of you can point me to a site (or another more appropriate tribe) to find something along these lines - that would be great.

thanks!

I'm interested in finding some folks here in good ol' Salt Lake City (or elsewhere if you're willing to work together long distance) to help me make some designs of mine come to life. I design clothing and jewelry in my spare time for Tribal Bellydance costuming and unfortunately I'm unable to make most of my designs life myself. If anyone is available or interested I've got a number of pieces I'm looking to make and sell and maybe if you aren't interested, you could help me find someone who is! Thanks!

old crafts

My specialty is old crafts from iron-age and vikingtimes. There are some techniekes people forgot about like naaldbinding and sprang.
So its extra fun to do them and teach others. Other technieks are better known like felting and (drop)spinning.
This week Im working on my weddingdress, because Im getting handfasted next week!!!
Even my soon to be husband is into vikingcrafts. He bought a book about cardweaving and made some cards out of berch.
Now we have this idea of making those weaving cards out of rawhide. so we bought rawhide for dogs. Going to soak it in hotwater so it makes it soft. Stretch , cut and dry it.
Anybody have some advise?

Greetings, Vikinggirl

Anybody did some rope making with nettels?
Since jute is not authentic vikingmaterial, I had the idea of making bags out of nettle.
Anybody have some experience?
I have seen it done in the iron-age village where I worked. They soked the nettles first and then used the flax hacker to get the fine fiber.
Maybe I forgot something. Advise?

I've been weaving for 20 years. I have a website, sell in 2 stores in the LA area, do crafts fairs. (No, I don't make my complete living at this yet.) I demonstrate carding, spinning, dyeing, weaving, cording in local schools. A main theme is value - if one creates the clothes one wears, how much value is conferred on the item? And when one confers value, isn't it that a sense of value is being generated in the person, then felt "towards the object"? How does this process affect one's sense of self esteem and being in the world, their sense of the world itself? Etc.

Some of my woven goods are created from scratch - starting with the newly shorn raw wool, washing it, carding, spinning, dyeing with plants (and bugs), then weaving and sometimes (as with shirts), sewing. I will be doing a full class, "sheep to shawl", for children in Culver City in February.

A new passion is finding dye sources in local, "native" plants. I will then create garments in these colors.

Any other weavers out there? Dyers? Fiber artists?

Thanks, Sebastian, feels like home.

I was born and raised in a rural area and I try very hard to retain the skills I grew up with. I'm an avid baker and cook. I also like to sew, embroider, make rugs, and bead. I'm currently attempting to teach myself leatherwork and knitting, maybe knitting with leather, I'm not sure. I'm always anxious to add to my growing list of skills.

Oh, and my partner is quite the talented blacksmith, so I've developed an appreciation for metalwork as well.

What did you make this week?
I tiled a floor last weekend. I threw a couple of ceramic pots later in the week. Made a few good meals ..especially the asparagus for brunch today, ...dyed a couple of pieces of clothing one afternoon..
small projects.
What's everyone else doing?

Right now I am making an atlatl out of hickory. Before there were bows and arrows there were atlatl's (spear chuckers). I still haven't made the darts (Poles 7' or so long used for 'spears'). I'll have to take a trip to a marshy area to get river reeds for the darts. Hopefully I'll have 8 darts and the atlatl finished by the next primitive archery event.

Today was my day off, so I got to finish my arrows. They were 90% finished, but the nocks were splitting, so my friend and I glued, thread wrapped and varnised the area below each nock for reinforcement. I think I need to file the nocks bigger so there is less chance of splitting the wood next time.

I'm also thinking of selling paintings on Ebay this summer, so I've been looking for ideas. I don't want to start off half-cocked without the motivation to finish. I have 2 half-finished paintings now that have run aground.

I need to do a leather project to for my new leatherworking tribe. I might make a new bracer for archery. The store bought one does in a pinch, but it's not artistically fulfilling.

Hi all, I'm new to this board. I'm a sewer, quilter, fabric dyer. I was laid off my "real job" a year ago and have been getting by teaching at a Local Quilt Shop. I teach whatever I want, but it's not a very artsy crowd. I find lately I'm so bogged down in the teaching that my creativity has gone out the window. Any suggestions for awakening the muse? Also, any natural dyers out there, I'd love to learn.

Outsourcing

All the recent talk about outsourcing has seemed a bit like a joke to me - the folks who are losing their tech jobs to overseas contractors likely don't own much handmade stuff. While trying to sell some benches I made a while back, someone told me (the tone was more like "let me explain the way the world works, Andy...") that people would rather spend a little less money on benches from Crate and Barrel or some other jive-ass store (Thankfully, a few days later I was comissioned to build a custom bench for some people who liked my work). So when I hear about people being upset about their jobs being outsourced I vacilate between thinking it's silly for them to whine about losing "their" job and really empathize with them. Making a living as an American craftsperson when the system is geared to undercut our version of a living wage can be rough. Maybe techworkers will start whistling a similar tune...

My specialties in fiber are beadwork and dyeing, but I try to know a little of everything about everything. My aesthetics are heavily influenced by Japanese craftsmanship of simplicity, and by 15th C Europe... but I dig just about everything.

This is my website:
http://www.geocities.com/hemoracallis

I also like to cook, and build stuff out of wood. Growing up in a fixer-upper house I learned a bit about home-maintenance and carpentry.

A big part of fiber for me is about seeing the structures of things as they influence the forms of an object. Form following function but more related to materials like the Saarinens (Eero and can't remember his wife's name right now), or Alvar Aalto. Those Finns! ( I am half-Finnish by descent, making me a "Soumiliina" )

Nice to meet all of you,
My boyfriend is a glassblower/lampworker. You can see some of his work at www.glassartists.org/jonathanfleming
Among other things, he makes glass beads, and I have used some of them to make necklaces and bracelets, etc.
We live in Central California.
Anyways, have a wonderful day everyone!

Here is an organization which helps. http://www.oxfam.org/eng/
You might want to look them up.

I am interested in organizations which promte the sale of hand-made products or products created with minimal manufacturing. There are also ways we can help bring back sustainable farming and enable the staying power of family farms. I know some of them but any you would like to share in case I don't know I would like. Thanks. Ara
